Music Videos directed by me

Yep, its been a busy year, and i've been squeezing out music videos for a few choice Portland bands like a happy summertime chicken. i have been blessed to work with great folks who have taken a chance with me, an unknown quantity to say the least! however, the results so far have been quite satisfying, so i plan to make OODLES more, eventually trying my hand at short films and features. i have a small pile of ideas i've been saving up, and more new ones by the day...just wait.

its funny, but directing really feels full circle for me. i started studying video production in high school, even moving from LA to SF to study "Broadcast & Electronic Arts" at SF State...finishing my major right off the bat, and dropping out by the time i was a junior. music stole my heart, and i followed that passion as a DJ, musician, promoter and fan for almost 2 decades, keeping photography as my main link to the very active visual part of my imagination.

so here i am. one refresher course last summer to brush up (thanks NW Film Center!) and i have found myself putting 3 videos to bed since. i feel like my creative center is on fire. unlocking this part of my brain feels right. i'm suddenly understanding myself as a photographer better, learning to hone my concepts and trust my instincts like never before. its pretty rad.

on that note, why not a little more sharing thats to the point:

ladies and gents - my new video for The Builders And The Butchers "Golden And Green"

making this video was a real treat, as the band told me they dug my Fairytales work, and trusted me to "go for it" aesthetically and thematically. so i did. i mean, when you are handed an epic song that sings the tale of Henry Darger, even mentioning the Vivian Girls by name, you either go straight for the "epic" jugular, or totally off into another world. if you know me or my work, you would understand that for me, there was no choice. it was Vivs or bust!

anyhoo - enjoy, and get ready for more - cause i'm just getting started.

NEW Music Video - Viva Voce "Octavio"

Hi y'all,

Guess what? I directed another music video. This is #2 in what i'm lightly referring to as my "trilogy of terror", what with Loch Lomond going to a watery grave in the first, and now Viva Voce passing on to the spirit world. I am currently in pre-production for the third in the trilogy - a music video for The Builders and the Butchers for their epic tune "Golden and Green." I won't spoil it for you...but its gonna be kinda surreal and spooky too. Suprising, eh? :-)

In the meanwhile - enjoy this hot off the presses spanky nugget - i'm so glad i finally get to share with you!

So many adventures, so little time!

Its been far too long since i dropped the haps on the blog...between Facebook and Flickr, traveling and working my buns off, this lil' portal has gone neglected. SO - here's a few highlights from the last few months...

NYC in December

I went to NYC in December and knocked out 3 shoots in 4 days including Portrait jams with:

Stars Of Track And Field

Alberta Cross

and

Marnie Stern

My shoot with Marnie was captured on video by the fine folks at Pitchfork. Watch Daytrippers to see yours truly at work, and hear Marnie's version of "The Aristocrats". Worth the price of admission alone (free, that is) -trust me!

In other news....

Check out my FLICKR stream for up to date pix. I publish public galleries of photos from all my projects/commissions as soon as I get the chance.....

Here's some tempting tidbits from recent shoots to get you started:

The Thermals

Golden Bloom

Pix from my trip to Yelapa,Mexico

and lots more....

Things have been slower than preferred this Winter, but look for lots more new photos from me in the next few months. Many projects in the works!

Can't wait to take more pictures...fer reals.

Loch Lomond "Blue Lead Fences" video - Alicia J. Rose's directorial debut!

video
Finally, I can share this with y'all...Here's the music video I directed for the fantastic PDX chamber folk combo - Loch Lomond. It was released into the world today, just in time for their November jaunt with another incredible PDX group - The Decemberists. Shot entirely on Super 8 over a lush August weekend at Milo Mciver State Park in Estacada, Oregon, the video is an eerie lo-fi masterpiece casting the co-ed chamber pop septet as a wayward cult on a determined journey toward a watery end..
Enjoy and here's looking forward to more directorial fun!

News Oct 08!

Rangefinder Feature

The nice folks at Rangefinder Magazine did a little feature on my work in their October issue. They called it Deep Inside The Rabbit Hole with Alicia J. Rose....it's nice. It features various music pix, ballet pix and portraits. If you'd like to peep - click here! For a more in depth and impromptu slice, keep an ear and and eye on their sister content site - Rangefinder Radio. They will be posting an interview they did with me in the next few days!

Loch Lomond Music Video

The finishing touches are being put on my first official foray into directing. Portland chamber-folk combo Loch Lomond were the subjects, and the soundtrack is an amazing tune entitled Blue Lead Fences that is off their as yet unnamed '09 release. Shot entirely on Super 8, it's a dark and vividly colorful document of a small cadre's' journey through the woods to a watery and mysterious end. It should be out in the public sphere soon....check my blog for updates.

Hearts & Daggers Update

People are saying very nice things about my recently released accordion/violin/voice duet album as Miss Murgatroid with the multi-talented Miss Petra Haden. It's called Tucson Weekly.

This is an album that exists in its own magical aesthetic realm, or better yet an infinite number of them all at once. - DustedMagazine.com

Hearts & Daggers is a modern and moving piece of craftsmanship. - Portland Monthly

If your interest is piqued, you can (finally!) download and listen to Hearts & Daggers for yourself via Itunes or procure the corporeal version (featuring stunning art by Christine Shields) at a music retailer near you! Petra is also featured on her father, Charlie Haden's new album Rambing Boy...Congrats to the Hadens for a wonderful effort!

Recently Captured...

Lots of new work just uploaded to my trusty and ever evolving Flickr portal...including Fall Fashion from visionary Portland fashion designer Liza Rietz, conceptual/promo photos for musicians Stephanie Schneiderman and Oracle and lots lots more. Keep an eye on the Newsstands for the Winter '08 issue of Bitch Magazine - I shot a forest still life for the cover. Quite festive and fancy. Of course, I'm always finding interesting reasons to make images, so if you wish to be kept ridiculously up in my picture taking biznatch, sign up for my RSS feed on Flickr. It's fun.

I head to bed satisfied and a little bit sad tonight...As I have just finished this massive assignment i got from XLR8R magazine, and the design director was stoked...the sad part that i can't share any of the fancy bits with you, my peeps....sigh...

soon though....the mag is doing a "Portland Issue" in October. they commissioned me to do 13+portraits in one week! it was fun. an amazing collection of local rock combos, talented luminaries and curious sub-sects....

so, since i can't share that part with you, i leave you with this photo from my recent Stephanie Schneiderman shoot...which i'm also super pleased with...this one was co-art directed by Arnold Pander. Fun stuff:

purrrr.....thanks to my sweet assistant Jordan Strong. Who makes it all a lot more fun!
